Although a baseball mecca for decades, the Cubans were the first Havana entry into U.S. baseball. In 1946, the Havana Cubans joined the Florida International League. Manager Oscar Rodriguez built a dynasty, as the Cubans won the FIL title every year from 1946 to 1950. The team was promoted to AAA status as the Havana Sugar Kings of the International League and adopted the slogan 'Un paso mas, y llegamos!' ('One more step, and we arrive!'). The following year, 1937, with Williams leading the way with 23 home runs and 98 RBIs, the Padres won the Governor's Cup. Soon after, Williams' contract was purchased by the Boston Red Sox.
