The PLC of 1903 to 1957 was unique among minor leagues. Because of its geographic isolation from the majors, the stability of its franchises, and the caliber of its play, the Coast League developed a style of baseball all of its own. Rather than take their chances in the majors, many gifted players preferred the PCL, where the pay was often as good or better, and they could remain close to home year round. After World War II, the PCL's ambition was to become certified as the third major league. To that end, they were awarded 'open' classification, and their players ere exempted from the major league draft. The dream was thwarted when Walter O'Malley and Horace Stoneham moved the Dodgers and Giants west, thereby robbing the league of its two richest territories, and displacing three PCL franchises.
