    Letters to the Editor: 10.26.03

    October 26, 2003

    Vote for Strayhorn

If (State Comptroller Carole Keeton) Strayhorn does run for governor, I'll vote for her.

I'll vote for anyone at this point who can push Gov. Rick Perry out of Texas. He only cares about his Washington ties and Republican redistricting. He cares nothing about school finance and any other issues important to true Texans. A lot of us are watching him and just getting angrier all the time.

    Teresa Sanders

    Out of line

I am a physician who wholeheartedly concurs with your lead editorial of Friday, Oct. 17, in which you appropriately criticized the physicians who signed a letter calling for District Judge Sandra Watts to recuse herself. Each point you made was valid, and I hope that your editorial will be required reading for all physicians in town in the future.

    Charles H. Campbell, M.D.

    Worthy couple

Corpus Christi is blessed with a number of outstanding citizens. We were glad to see two of these, Chris and Bob Adler, honored by the Boy Scouts of America with its 2003 Distinguished Citizens Award.

It would be hard to find a more deserving and fun couple.

    R.N. Conolly

    Vote will count

How does redistricting dilute my vote as a minority voter? If anything, my vote will now be received by a greater voice.

There is more than just political affiliation to consider. We must take into account our family values and beliefs. I vote based on my strong family values and for the last 20 years my values have not been represented by the Democratic Party.

I want my daughter to have the same opportunities as non-minority children. I don't want my child to have to rely on welfare handouts; I want quality education, a strong work ethic, and the right to have God in her life. God is the reason for our being and unfortunately, the Demo-cratic Party does not share in my beliefs. They want to remove God from being represented in public places and before you know it, they will be trying to remove God from our homes.

Hispanics need more choices in politics. We don't need the racist Democratic Party to assume that we are stupid and will vote based solely on political affiliation. I was taught that human life is sacred and a gift from God. And for the last 30-plus years, the Democratic Party has aligned itself with baby killers and atheists. The new redistricting map will finally give my vote a chance to be heard.

    Turn other cheek

I have a few words of wisdom for the offended few and the community organizations, such as LULAC and GI Forum, whose favorite words are racism and unfair.

Please turn your influence and education to matters of true concern in your communities. For example, raising the education levels of our children, giving self-pride and self-respect. Help stop community violence and criminal activities and educate on alternatives. Teach community respect and the virtue of community service. Teach our children that sex is not love and getting pregnant doesn't make you an adult.

God told us that we must help one another and we must care for our brothers and sisters. And, he also said, "that we must turn the other cheek to those who offend us and love them as ourselves." Good words to live by.

    Teresa Rodriguez

    Not just Robstown

Just when I thought all this Calallen skit business had died down, lo and behold, I come across Ms. Stanley's letter to the editor, ("Truth hurts," Oct. 17).

The only thing the teachers are guilty of is bad judgment and insensitivity. They should have set a better example. I agree that their actions are not bad enough that they should be terminated.

Ms. Stanley's letter, however, is justifying this behavior by snubbing her own nose towards people "less fortunate" than she is.

The schools that were mocked are not the only areas with those problems. Alice is not the only city with a gang problem, and Robstown most certainly is not the only area seeing an increasing rate of teenage pregnancies.

Contrary to Ms. Stanley's belief, no, LULAC should not be solely responsible for correcting these problems. If people such as Ms. Stanley would lend a helping hand, then maybe something positive could be achieved.

    Bush lost respect

We now know that Bush and the old men who surround him had a plan to attack Iraq long before 9/11. And it's obvious that they had little if any real plans for dealing with postwar Iraq, other than to take over the oil fields and redraw the map of the Middle East according to their liking.

They got the oil fields up and running while the Iraqi people lack the rudiments of clean water, adequate food and electricity. The oil ministry was protected while hospitals, museums and businesses were allowed to be looted.

It's time that this president be held accountable for all the American soldiers who have died in this shameful war and continue to be killed every week, and for the 3,000-plus Iraqi civilians who were killed, many of whom were children.

America once had everything going for it. We had the respect of just about the whole world. How quickly and brazenly the Bush administration has thrown that all away.

    Public's place

In response to the Fred Dreiling's letter (Oct. 16) titled, "Tear it down."

I, too, have lived in Corpus Christi for a while. I, too, have gone to the Coliseum. They were memorable experiences both times. In the 1950s, I went to see a niece skate for a traveling ice show. In the early 1960s, I went to see the Righteous Brothers.

In the early 1970s, I casually met the architect of the Coliseum as he strolled through a potter's studio on the grounds of his office. I remember an imposing figure, a dominant personality who treated his employees justly, an overseer with nobility in his mortal body.

I do not know what he would say about the Coliseum's future. But, I can rest assured it would not be something half-baked or silly. And it would certainly be said without fear or doubt.

I say the Coliseum is pro bono publico and not a private site for another cash register. Its continued neglect and misuse belongs to the attitude and palate of the people who own it. And that perhaps is connected to the downward spiral of American culture.

    Arthur Brooks

    Best view

My wife and I spend two to three months each winter on North Padre, and I read the Caller-Times on the Internet daily to keep up with the happenings in our winter home.

I congratulate the city administration for its decision on Landry's use of the bayfront. I drive Shoreline frequently on the way to my volunteer job at the Museum of Science and History, and I always take visitors on that drive. Say what you will about the "windshield view" of the bayfront, it is the best thing Corpus Christi has going for it.

I feel that I have a vested interest in Corpus Christi, as I lived here from 1941 to 1957, and was in the last graduating class of Corpus Christi High School (1950).
